Diving with Manta Rays

Alongside the elusive whale shark, manta rays are often at the top of every diver’s wish list when visiting Thailand. To encounter one of these graceful giants up close—or even catch a fleeting glimpse—is truly mesmerizing. Gliding effortlessly through the water like birds in flight, mantas move with a silent elegance, reminiscent of eagles riding thermal currents. Frequently found near reef systems, these majestic creatures are not uncommon in Thai waters, offering divers unforgettable moments beneath the surface.

Where to See Manta Rays in Thailand

About The Manta Ray

  • Did you know there are actually two species of manta rays? The more commonly encountered reef manta has a wingspan of around 3–4 meters, while the larger and more majestic oceanic manta averages 4–5 meters, with some individuals reaching up to 6 or even 7 meters in width! We also occasionally spot mobula rays, often referred to as "mini mantas." Though a different species, they share a similar appearance, typically with a wingspan of around 2 meters. Unlike the usually solitary or small-group nature of mantas, mobula rays can be seen traveling in large schools of up to 100 or more.

  • The name manta comes from the Spanish word for "blanket," given by early sailors who were awestruck by their broad, graceful form. Mantas feed on plankton, which they filter through their specialized gills. They're often seen gliding just below the surface, mouth open as they feed—or even performing underwater loops and spins in a graceful display of natural acrobatics.

  • Each manta ray is unique, with individual spot patterns on their white underbellies. Most are black on top and white underneath, but some are almost entirely black, while others have very faint markings. These patterns allow researchers and divers to identify and monitor individuals. To learn more, we highly recommend visiting the Manta Trust, a great resource for manta ray conservation and research.

  • We truly hope to help you experience the unforgettable thrill of diving with a manta ray here in Thailand!
